Employees at companies that combine health insurance with disability insurance may do more to take care of their health.

Aetna Inc., Hartford, has presented that finding in a summary of results from an analysis of its integrated benefits program, which combines medical insurance, wellness programs and disability insurance.

Aetna compared members with integrated benefits with member of control groups. The plan members in integrated programs were about 3 times as likely to undergo health risk assessments, and about 35% of the integrated program members who assessed their health risk signed up for condition management programs, Aetna says.

At one large employer, about half of the integrated program members who had high blood pressure when they participated in the first risk assessment eliminated that problem by the time they participated in a followup assessment, Aetna reports.
