A life insurer is trying to reach out to distributors by expanding its own sales and marketing organization.

West Coast Life Insurance Company, San Francisco, a unit of Protective Life Corp., Birmingham, Ala., has named Greg Zabel to be vice president and national sales manager.

Zabel previously was senior vice president, national account distribution, at American General Life, a unit of American International Group Inc., New York.

Other new executives hired from American General Life include Steve Malter, the divisional vice president for the Eastern Division, and David Weaver, the divisional vice president for the Central Division.

Tom Hall, who worked for a U.S. unit of AXA S.A. Paris, will be the divisional vice president for the Western Division.

West Coast Life also has hired Chris Chertboonmuang to be a regional vice president in the Western Division, and Steve Robinson and Matt Szychulski to be senior account managers.

Another Protective Life unit, Protective Life Insurance Company, has hired Scott Christie and Daniel Perrin to be second vice presidents. The unit also has promoted Joe Ross to second vice president, from a sales management position.

Christie is in life marketing. Ross and Perrin are in sales training.
