Enrollment in high-deductible health plans that are compatible with health savings accounts has increased 31% in the past year, to 8 million.

Researchers at America’s Health Insurance Plans, Washington, have released that finding in a summary of results from a survey of AHIP member carriers.

The number of U.S. residents in HSA-compatible plans has increased from 6.1 million in 2008, AHIP says.

About 83% of the enrollees are in preferred provider organization plans, and 10% are in health maintenance organization plans.

HSA holders reported an average of $1,634 in total deposits and an average of $1,063 in total withdrawals.
