A health insurer says it will keep most of its Medicare plans but discontinue its Medicare Advantage private fee-for-service plans in 2010.

The private FFS Medicare plans enroll about 110,000 of the 2.5 million individuals enrolled in WellCare plans, according to WellCare, Tampa, Fla.

WellCare has been facing government investigations, but “this action is not related to the previously disclosed investigations,” the company says.

WellCare notes that it and a special board committee have been cooperating with enforcement and regulatory officials in connection with the investigations.

In addition to offering Medicare private FFS plans, WellCare offers Medicare health maintenance organization and Medicare Part D prescription drug plans . Those plans are separate from the private FFS plans and will not be affected by the shutdown of the private FFS plans, WellCare says.
