About 27% of U.S. workers say they would have trouble supporting themselves financially the instant they suffered a disabling illness or injury.

Researchers at the Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education, Arlington, Va., have published that finding in a summary of results from a recent survey of 1,007 U.S. residents ages 18 and older.

LIFE commissioned the survey in connection with Disability Insurance Awareness Month, which starts today.

About 49% of the survey participants said a disability would cause severe financial problems within a month, and 74% said they would face severe troubles within 6 months.

About 90 million U.S. residents now lack disability insurance protection, LIFE reports.
