U.S. workers say their health is holding up, but West Coast residents say working conditions are deteriorating rapidly.

Researchers at Gallup Inc., Princeton, N.J., and Healthways Inc., Nashville, Tenn., have released those findings in a report on the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index.

The well-being index is based on measures of factors such as emotional health, physical health, healthy behavior, work environment, basic access to the essentials of life, and personal assessments of a survey participant’s current and future life situation.

The overall index fell to about 64% in February, down from about 67% in February 2008.

The physical health sub-index was about 76%, down only slightly.

The basic access fell 1.2 percentage points, to 81.5%, and the healthy behavior index fell 1.6 percentage points, to a little less than 62%.

The national work environment index fell 2.9 percentage points, to about 49%.

West Coast participants were much more negative about their work environment. The West Coast participants’ work environment index fell 5.5 percentage points, to less than 48%.

The life situation index for all participants plunged 10 percentage points, to about 37%.
