The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded a new managed care company building “Gold-level” Leadership in Energy and Design certification.

UnitedHealth Group Inc., Minnetonka, Minn., says a new, 10-story building on its headquarters campus is one of only 22 LEED-certified commercial buildings in Minnesota and one of only 8 Gold-level LEED-certified commercial buildings.

The U.S. Green Building Council, Washington, developed the LEED program to encourage architects and their clients to think about the environment when designing buildings.

The new UnitedHealth building uses low-flow water fixtures, weather-sensitive landscaping irrigation, sensor-controlled lights, and other features that reduce use of water, electricity and other resources.

The building encourages employees to conserve energy by providing 74 bike racks.
