Jim Long, 68, a former president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, died Monday.

Long, who suffered a stroke Jan. 21, had served as North Carolina insurance commissioner for 24 years. He retired in January.

Long collapsed while attending the final meeting of a state legislative committee that was studying how to improve payment of claims following a major hurricane.

Long was NAIC president in 1991.

The NAIC, Kansas City, Mo., honored him for his service at its 2008 winter meeting.
