A health insurance giant and a technology giant are joining forces.

Aetna Inc., Hartford, and Microsoft Corp., Redmond, Wash., says Aetna will be connecting its personal health record system directly to Microsoft’s HealthVault consumer health information system.

Starting in November, Aetna members who are using the PHR system will be able transfer Aetna PHR data into their HealthVault personal health record accounts.

In 2009, Aetna members will be able to import HealthVault data into their Aetna PHRs, according to Aetna and Microsoft.

About 6 million Aetna plan members now have access to the Aetna PHR system.
