Senators have introduced a bill that would require health insurers to cover prosthetic devices.

The bill, S. 3517, was cosponsored by Senators Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) and Russell Feingold (D-Wisc.).

The bill, named the Prosthetics Parity Act of 2008, is similar to a bill previously introduced in the House. It is designed to ensure that amputees covered by employer-paid health insurance would have access to prosthetic care, according to the Amputee Coalition of America, Knoxville, Tenn., which supports the bill.

Eleven states have enacted prosthetic parity laws and similar legislation is being advanced in more than 30 states, according to the Amputee Coalition.
