A looming presidential election has both parties scrambling to find solutions for health care and long-term financial security for the elderly.

On August 26, Thomas Nelson, the chief operating officer of AARP stressed bipartisanship as the primary message of the organization’s Divided We Fail campaign.

Divided We Fail, is an election-year effort, informing the public and businesses on ways to provide affordable, quality, long-term health care and financial security for everyone.

Focusing on maintaining the independence at home or in the communities of the elderly, the organization emphasizes affordable financing options.

According to the Associated Press, approximately 750,000 of the groups 40 million members are directly involved in the Divided We Fail campaign.

Results of the United States’ high, per-capita, spending rates does not equate to the poor health of Americans in comparison to other countries.

According to the AP, Nelson believes Ill. Sen. Barack Obama and Ariz. Sen. John McCain are committed to having their parties work together, to address issues facing the elderly.

The non-profit campaign stresses affordable health care and its intention of not burdening future generations. AARP suggests diet and exercise for longevity and health. So far, neither candidate has proposed how their parties will address these issues.

Supporting the strengthening of Social Security and opposing privatization proposals, the AARP believes this will give Americans the incentive to save and have access to effective retirement plans.
