Members of the Association for Advanced Life Underwriting are providing free financial literacy classes to consumers.

The purpose of the classes are to promote fiscal responsibility among consumers, says AALU, Falls Church, Va. It will offer the first class Aug. 28 in Los Angeles.

Part of the reason for the course is government data showing that Americans have shown a negative savings rate for the last 2 years, said AALU chief executive David J. Stertzer.

“People are spending more than they earn,” Stertzer said. “These classes will teach basic skills such as how to balance a budget and how to save for retirement.”
