Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink has called for an independent audit after WellCare Health Plans Inc. reported errors resulting in $46.5 million of overpayments.

Because the errors include millions paid by Florida’s Healthy Kids program, Sink called on administrators of the program to “conduct an exhaustive and independent audit to ensure this program is made whole.”

WellCare reports overpayments for 2 Florida programs, a contract with Florida Healthy Kids Corp. and the behavioral health components of an Agency for Health Care Administration Medicaid contract, according to Sink. She asked Florida Healthy Kids Executive Director Rich Robleto to retain outside auditors to verify the amount owed to the program.

As the state’s CFO, Sink is also chair of the Healthy Kids Board of Directors.
