The Blue Shield of California Foundation says it may spend up to $4 million to help hospitals in its state reduce the number of infections associated with health care.

The foundation, an affiliate of the Blue Shield of California, San Francisco, hopes to include a total of 55 hospitals in the project.

The foundation earlier started a smaller version of the project that included 9 hospitals.

The project will include grants to help nonprofit hospitals buy data-mining technology that can help them detect and treat infections as quickly as possible, the foundation says.
