A Montana Democrat has come to the aid of the national long term care industry by adding his support for the maintenance of the exception process to Medicare Part B therapy caps.

In a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt, Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) urged the delay of the enforcement of the caps for 18 months.

“We thank Senator Baucus for leading the fight in Congress to protect seniors’ access to critical rehabilitation services,” said Bruce Yarwood, president and CEO of the AHCA. “On behalf of the millions of Medicare beneficiaries cared for by AHCA members, we echo his call for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to delay implementation of the onerous therapy caps.”

“More than 700,000 Medicare beneficiaries will exceed their limit on Part B outpatient therapies this year, and it is critical to extend the exceptions process to allow these individuals to continue receiving the care they need and deserve,” added Peter Clendenin, executive VP of the NASL.
