The U.S. Government Accountability Office has completed its review of the long term care insurance industry’s claims-handling practices.

For the time being, however, the GAO is not releasing the report publicly, at the request of Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, who had asked for the study.

Grassley, the highest ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, asked the GAO to investigate last September after a New York Times report charged that some LTC carriers may have denied or delayed claims unfairly.

Grassley also asked the office to evaluate whether state insurance regulators are dealing adequately with complaints about LTC insurance claim denials.

After completing its findings, the GAO sent the report to Grassley June 30. Grassley then asked the agency to embargo the report’s contents for 30 days, a GAO spokeswoman says.
