Trust in media fades

A survey from Harris Interactive shows Americans tend to go to their local television news and newspapers for their political news, but that doesn’t mean they trust the source. The survey found, in general, 54 percent of Americans say they tend not to trust the media; just 30 percent say they do. Interestingly, most people don’t profess a great trust in politicians either, so they trust neither their elected officials nor the news outlets that cover them.

Among those who say they go to various sources all the time or occasionally – even if they don’t claim to trust them – local TV news, cable TV news, local newspapers and network TV news fare the best. Among seniors, age 63 and above in this survey, the numbers break out this way: 83 percent say they watch local TV news; 78 percent read local newspapers; 75 percent view network TV news; and 71 percent watch cable TV news shows such as those on CNN, Fox and MSNBC.
