Make the home senior friendly

The whole home:

• Fasten handrails on all stairways.
• Make sure all areas are well lit and the switches are easy to operate.
• Telephone should be accessible.
• Place security locks on doors, and make them easy to operate.
• Replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors regularly.

The bathroom:

• When needed, install grab bars for the tub, shower and toilet.
• Place non-slip surfaces in tub and shower.
• Set the hot water heater to prevent scalding.
• Install a night light.

The bedroom:

• Ensure furniture leaves a clear path to bathroom.
• Put non-slip backing on rugs.
• Buy a sturdy bedside table and a nontip lamp.

The kitchen:

• Make sure frequently used items are within arm’s reach.
• Place a fire extinguisher within reach of the stove.
• Create a work area where a person can sit while preparing food.
