An insurer is trying to take a more personalized approach to encourage workers to take care of themselves.

Nationwide Better Health, a unit of Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, Columbus, Ohio, says its new health improvement program will start with a conventional health risk assessment screening program, then feed workers into a second screening program that will grade each worker's individual risks.

Workers who participate will get a wellness score and a "heart age" score immediately, and they will get immediate recommendations about lifestyle health management options that they should consider, Nationwide says.

Lifestyle health coaches will create a customized action plan for every employee and reach out to employees through the telephone as well as through mail and through the Internet, Nationwide says.
