A managed care company is beefing up its member Web site system with a new data retrieval system.

Aetna Inc., Hartford, has adopted Medically Guided Search technology from Healthline Networks Inc., San Francisco.

A search engine that incorporates the technology, the Aetna SmartSource system, can take the age, gender, ZIP code, health plan and employer of a plan member into account when helping the member find information, Aetna says.

The system can retrieve information from Aetna's consumer health information Web site, the company's provider directory, a health care shopping system, and a care cost estimation system, Aetna says.

Aetna now is testing the system on its own employees. The company is in the process of setting up similar test systems for some of its large customers.
