AHIP: Boomers Underestimate Disability Risk

Only about 25% of U.S. adults ages 44 to 62 know roughly how likely U.S. workers are to be disabled for 3 months or more.

Researchers at America’s Health Insurance Plans, Washington, have published data supporting that conclusion in a summary of results from a recent survey of 2,853 U.S. adults, including 828 boomers.

In most cases, boomers’ answers were similar to other participants’ answers, but half of the boomers said they thought the risk of suffering a 3-month disability was only about 10%.

The average of all participants’ response was 12%, and the actual answer is about 30%, AHIP reports.

About 9% of the boomer participants estimated the likelihood was 21% to 30%, and 16% estimated it was 31% to 50%.

But researchers also found that about 48% of the boomers said they personally were concerned about the risk of experiencing a disability, compared with 36% of all the participants.
