An insurer will be helping some long-term disability insureds compensate for the effects of the coverage elimination period.

Sun Life Financial U.S., Wellesley Hills, Mass., a unit of Sun Life Financial Inc., Toronto, is introducing the Retro Disability Benefits group LTD product feature.

The feature, now available in 43 states, applies to group LTD plan members who are hospitalized for 14 days or more at the onset of total disability and then are approved for LTD benefits.

When the claimants are approved for group LTD benefits, Sun Life will retroactively pay the claimants the LTD benefits they would have received if there were no elimination period, and benefits payments had started the first day the claimants were deemed totally disabled, the company says.

Sun Life will pay the retroactive benefit as a lump sum, without including offsets for earnings, sick pay or other insurance benefits, the company says.

Sun Life will make the benefit available automatically for all eligible claimants, without requiring employers or employees to complete extra forms, the company says.
