Dialysis Provider Sues Carrier

National Alliance L.L.C. is objecting to a large health carrier’s reimbursement rules.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia, Atlanta, a unit of WellPoint Inc., Indianapolis, has adopted a payment approach that cuts payments to National Alliance, Franklin, Tenn., to about 12% of the customarily reimbursed rate, National Alliance says in a suit filed in the U.S. District Court in Atlanta.

Georgia Blue has been trying to cut reimbursement rates for out-of-network care, National Alliance says.

Forcing dialysis patients to seek care out of network is unfair, because they may need as many as 20 hours of treatment a week to stay alive, and a need to travel long distances for dialysis may cause some patients to endanger their lives by skimping on dialysis, National Alliance says.

WellPoint was not immediately available for comment on the suit.
