Garden State Lawmakers Pass Prosthetic Care Mandate

New Jersey lawmakers have approved S.B. 502, a bill that could require health insurers to cover orthotic and prosthetic care for amputees.

Gov. Jon Corzine, a Democrat, must sign the bill before it can become law, according to the Amputee Coalition of America, Knoxville, Tenn.

Health insurers oppose most benefits mandates, arguing that they decrease carrier flexibility and often increase costs.

Supporters of the prosthetic care mandate contended that their bill would increase carrier costs by about 25 cents per $1,000 of insurance premium revenue but dramatically improve the quality of life of many amputees.
