Amalgamated Life Insurance Company has hired David Walsh, a past president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, to succeed Ronald Minikes as president.

Minikes will retire from his post Jan. 21, according to Amalgamated, New York.

Amalgamated was founded in 1943 to provide insurance and related products and services for unions and union members.

Walsh has been an executive vice president at SBLI USA Mutual Life Insurance Company, New York. He previously was corporate counsel for Swiss Re Life and Health, Stamford, Conn., a unit of Swiss Reinsurance Company, Zurich.

Walsh served as the Alaska insurance director and the NAIC president in the mid-1990s.

Walsh has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Loras College, a master’s degree in business from Alaska Pacific University, and a law degree from the University of Wisconsin.
