Hartford Cuts Approval Time For Voluntary Life, Disability

The Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. says it has significantly cut the medical underwriting process for its voluntary group life and disability insurance benefits sold through employers.

Rather than taking days or weeks, getting an underwriting decision about coverage takes mere seconds with a new online evidence of insurability tool offered by Hartford, Simsbury, Conn.

The company modified its medical underwriting guidelines to make group life and disability coverage more accessible to more people, says Mary Ericson, assistant vice president of voluntary business for the Hartford’s group benefits division.

Hartford says its EOI tool allows workers to submit health information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, cutting the administrative load on employers and providing decisions about coverage in real time for most employees through The Hartford’s medical underwriting system.

Employees who submit information about their health online receive a decision within seconds about whether or not coverage has been approved or if they need to provide additional information, the Hartford says.
