A managed care company is trying to help plan members make sense of results from tests that indicate whether testees may face increased genetic risk of developing cancer.

Aetna Inc., Hartford, is buying access to telephone and Web-based cancer genetic counseling services from Informed Medical Decisions Inc., Palm Springs, Fla.

Use of the telephone-based counseling will be confidential, and the counselors will not share information about use of the counseling with Aetna or with plan members’ employers, Aetna says.

Aetna says it decided to offer the program to all plan members after giving its own employees a chance to try to the program.
