Personnel Changes: NAIFA, Sun Life, Others

The National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors has hired Susan Waters to be deputy chief executive officer.

Waters previously was president of Sextant Consulting, Half Moon Bay, Calif., according to NAIFA, Falls Church, Va.,

Waters also has been a licensed insurance broker and executive vice president of an insurance agency, NAIFA says.

In other personnel news:

- Sun Life Financial Inc., Toronto, has put Robert Salipante in charge of a new International Variable Annuity Center unit.

Salipante continues to be president of the Sun Life Financial U.S. unit.

Sun Life also has named Tom Bogart chairman of its Sun Life Insurance (Canada) Ltd. and Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada (U.S.) subsidiaries. Bogart has been and will continue to be the company’s general counsel.

- Meritain Health Inc., Amherst, N.Y., has hired Thomas Applehans to be regional vice president of sales for a region that includes Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, and parts of California and Nevada.

Applehans previously was a national account manager at Great-West Life & Annuity Insurance Company, Greenwood Village, Colo.

Applehans has a bachelor’s degree in marketing and a master’s degree in finance from the University of Colorado. He is a member of the board and legislative chair of the Colorado Group Insurance Association, Denver.

- Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell L.L.P. has brought in Joel Prather to be “of counsel.”

Prather, who will practice in the law firm’s Atlanta and Washington offices, previously was general counsel of Maple Life Financial Inc., Bethesda, Md.

Prather also has worked as a senior attorney in the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation.
