A Midwestern insurer has come out with an insurance policy that can fill holes in older consumers’ Medicare coverage.

Bankers Life and Casualty Company, Chicago, a unit of Conseco Inc., Carmel, Ind., says the company’s new Senior Hospital Indemnity policy is an individual plan that pays hospital and emergency room benefits directly to seniors.

Bankers Life is issuing the policy to seniors ages 65 to 84 without requiring medical exams or physician statements.

Optional riders can pay extra benefits for skilled nursing facility stays, durable medical equipment and ambulance service, Bankers Life says.

Bankers Life is starting by selling the product through career agents in 11 states.
