A health insurer will cut health insurance costs up to 6% for group plan members who take steps to improve their own health.

Principal Financial Group Inc., Des Moines, Iowa, says it will require members of group plans that adopt the wellness incentive program to complete a health risk assessment and wellness screening process.

All plan members will pay the same premiums.

During the first 3 months that the program is in effect, all members will pay the same co-payments and deductibles, Principal says.

After the program has been in effect for 3 months, members who are failing to take steps to control their personal health risks will have to pay higher deductibles and co-payments, Principal says.

Principal is starting by offering the incentive program in Iowa and Michigan.
