The Life Insurance Direct Marketing Association gave a $500 educational grant to Jessica Hoffman.
Hoffman, a 22-year-old college student, was selected on the basis of an essay she wrote for the Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education, Washington.
Hoffman spoke in San Diego at the fall meeting of the LIDMA, San Diego, about her experiences as the daughter of a father who died of lung cancer.
Hoffman is taking medical billing and coding classes.
