The New York State Insurance Department has set up an Elder Protection Unit.

The department established the unit in response to seniors’ complaints about problems with insurance and allegations of producers using deceptive practices to sell insurance to seniors, department officials say.

Products and services of interest to the unit will include life settlements, Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare supplement insurance plans, long term care insurance and assisted living arrangements, officials say.

Staff members of the new unit will include employees from the New York department’s consumer services, health, life and property bureaus.
