A large managed care company is trying to minimize its use of natural resources.

UnitedHealth Group Inc., Minnetonka, Minn., has broken ground on a new, 10-story building next to its current headquarters building.

UnitedHealth will be applying for certification of the 350,000-square-foot building from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System, a program developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, Washington, to encourage the construction of healthy, environmentally responsible buildings.

LEED-certified buildings use an average of about 30% less energy than conventional buildings, the council says.

A number of companies have started seeking LEED certification of buildings, but there are now only 6 LEED-certified buildings in Minnesota, according to UnitedHealth.
