A large financial services company has realigned its management team.

Hartford Financial Services Group Inc., Hartford, has named Thomas Marra, 48, who has been president of the life unit, to be president and chief operating officer as the company as a whole.

The positions are new positions.

David Zwiener, 52, who has been president of the Hartford property-casualty operations, is leaving to become managing director of a new financial institutions group at the Carlyle Group, Washington.

Ramani Ayer, 60, the current head of Hartford, will continue to be Hartford’s chairman and chief executive officer.

The Hartford board created the president and COO positions as a part of succession planning efforts, to give the company a multi-year period for working on enterprise leadership issues, the company says.

Marra began working for Hartford in 1980 and began running the life operations in 2000.

In related news, Hartford is promoting Neal Wolin to president of the property-casualty operations, from general counsel.

Hartford has decided to have John Walters, who runs the company’s U.S. wealth management business, and Liz Zlatkus, who runs the international wealth management and group benefits businesses, become co-chief operating officers of the life operations.

Wolin will be succeeded by Alan Kreczko, the company’s deputy general counsel. Kreczko has been legal advisor to the National Security Council and deputy general counsel at the U.S. State Department. When he left the State Department, he was acting assistant secretary for refugees, population and migration at the State Department.
