A unit of StanCorp Financial Group Inc. is trying to expand access to long term disability insurance protection.

Standard Insurance Company, Portland, Ore., has introduced the Basic LTD plan, an LTD plan designed for employers with large groups of retail workers or other workers who face a relatively high risk of becoming disabled.

Standard is keeping rates low by offering benefits that amount to a relatively low percentage of current income.

In return, Standard will hold premium rates low and agree not to reduce the lower benefit payments to reflect beneficiaries’ Social Security Disability Insurance benefits, work earnings or other income, the company says.

Standard is offering the product to groups with 15 or more covered employees.

Product features include a reasonable accommodation expense benefit and a rehabilitation plan provision, along with employee assistance program services for groups of 15 to 2,500 covered lives.
