Researchers at Milliman Inc., Seattle, an actuarial firm, say the typical U.S. family of 4 will spend $14,500 on medical care this year, up 8.4% from the total for 2006.

The size of that family’s deductible will increase 9.5%, to $2,420, the Milliman researchers estimate.

The magnitude of the median rate increase for the typical family is down from 9.6% a year ago, Milliman researchers estimate.

The researchers are basing their results on costs for a family of 4 covered by an employer-sponsored preferred provider plan.

The index total includes doctor bills, hospital bills and payments for prescription drugs.
