Guardian Recognizes Young Entrepreneur

Stephanie Brown, 18, has won the 2007 Girls Going Places Entrepreneurship Award Program.

Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, New York, sponsors the scholarship contest, which recognizes teen-age girls who have demonstrated exceptional entrepreneurship.

Brown, who received a $10,000 scholarship, started Oakwood Universal 1, Centerport, N.Y., a student-run high school credit union.

The second prize winner, Jasmine Lawrence, 15, founded Eden BodyWorks, a line of all natural hair care products, and the third prize winner, Jillian Brown, 17, started a summer mini camp in Orlean, Va., that appeals to girls who are fans of the American Girl Doll Collection.

Lawrence received a $5,000 scholarship, and Jillian Brown received a $3,000 scholarship. Guardian also awarded 12 $1,000 scholarships.

Guardian says it received about 4,000 entries for the 2006 competition.

The 2006 first prize winner, Ionnie McNeil, founded Speak 2 Share Inc., Miami, a financial advice firm for young people.

The 2005 first prize winner, Chauncey Holloman, started Harlem Lyrics Enterprises Inc., Mabelvale, Ark., a greeting card and merchandising business.

Other winners include the 2004 first prize winner, Laima Tazmin, founder of LAVTweb, a Web development company; the 2003 first prize winner, Kelly Drinkwater, founder of the Splash store; and the 2002 first prize winner, Karalynn Forrest, founder of a summer camp.
