The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association says it is willing to help fund a new agency that would evaluate which medical treatments work best.

The BCBSA, Chicago, is asking Congress to use an assessment on Blues plans and other health carriers to pay for the new institute, which would compare the effectiveness of new and existing medical procedures, drugs, devices, and biologics.

One element of the BCBSA proposal would provide protection against medical malpractice suits for physicians who follow institute safe harbor guidelines.

Another organization, America’s Health Insurance Plans, Washington, recently unveiled another similar proposal for an effectiveness comparison institute.
