A group benefits insurer is expanding its capabilities in Texas.

Ameritas Life Insurance Corp., Lincoln, Neb., has applied for approval with Lone Star State insurance regulators to acquire LifeRe Insurance Company, San Antonio.

Ameritas is a unit of UNIFI Mutual Holding Company, Lincoln, Neb., which sells dental insurance and other products.

LifeRe, formerly known as Texas Legal Reserve Life Insurance Company, was founded in 1984 and has been active in the dental, eye care, group term life, group disability, and Section 125 administration markets.

LifeRe is selling in part because Richard Galland, the chairman, is retiring, LifeRe says.

Ameritas hopes to get Texas approval to close on the deal by July 2.
