The Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education is getting ready to mount a major effort to teach consumers about the risk that an illness or injury could wipe out their income.

LIFE, Washington, will start the first Disability Insurance Awareness Month May 1.

LIFE officials say they hope the disability month program will do for awareness of disability insurance what the September life awareness month has done for awareness of life insurance.

LIFE started the life insurance awareness month program in 2004.

LIFE will kick off disability month by releasing a major disability trends white paper developed by Milliman Inc., Seattle.

Other disability month activities will include a May 7 satellite television and radio media tour with Mike Nolte, an author who suffered third-degree burns in 2003 when his parked car was hit from behind by a truck and exploded; a May 10 disability Web seminar for members of the Million Dollar Round Table, Park Ridge, Ill.; and a May 29 radio media tour with LIFE President David Woods; and a

LIFE also is sending disability awareness public service announcements to thousands of radio stations, and it is running a disability awareness consumer print ad in the May 21 issue of Newsweek magazine.

Many insurance companies are pitching in by organizing their own disability month events and media campaigns, LIFE says.
