An official of the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation has resigned following reports the department is being investigated for improper political activity.

Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty announced the resignation of his communications director, Bob Lotane, following allegations of unauthorized use of a state-owned computer by the office.

The move follows press reports that State Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink is investigating whether departmental computers were used to prepare a fundraiser for Robin Lotane, wife of the former communications director, who is running for state circuit judge.

McCarty announced that Dan Callahan, his office’s inspector general, will investigate the incident along with Department of Financial Services Acting Inspector General Doug Darling.
