A managed care company will be rewarding more doctors for providing high-quality care.

Aetna, Hartford, says it is adding family practice and internal medicine doctors in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Northern Virginia to its Bridges to Excellence program.

The program, already operating in Atlanta, Cincinnati and Louisville, Ky., provides incentive payments for doctors who meet care quality benchmarks.

In the Washington area, doctors will be eligible for incentive payments of $100 per year per diabetic patient and $160 per year per heart or stroke patient, Aetna says.

Aetna provides the incentive payments along with ordinary payments for services rendered.

Participating patients must be age 18 and older, and they must be covered by Aetna’s health maintenance organization plans.
