Conseco Senior Health Insurance Company has agreed to settle with the Nebraska Department of Insurance over allegations the company failed to respond adequately to complaints about the company’s handling of some long term care insurance claims.

A total of 10 complaints were cited by the DOI in its consent order, filed at the end of December but only recently posted on the department’s Web site.

Some complaints alleged Conseco Senior Health, a subsidiary of Conseco Inc., Carmel, Ind., failed to follow state procedures for handling appeals of LTC claims decisions.

Others charged the company failed to explain to claimants why certain claims were denied or how their complaint was resolved.

Conseco neither denied nor admitted to any violations in the case but agreed to pay an administrative fine of $95,000.

A spokesman for Conseco said it was company policy not to comment on legal actions.
