A large health insurer has unveiled its entry into the health account payment card arena.

CIGNA HealthCare, Bloomfield, Conn., a unit of CIGNA Corp., Philadelphia, says it will be basing its new HealthePass card system on a “hold and settle” process developed by American Express Company, New York.

American Express, in turn, will be incorporating health account card services from Metavante Corp., a unit of Marshall & Ilsley Corp., Milwaukee.

CIGNA members will be able to use the HealthePass card to draw on ordinary lines of credit as well as health savings accounts and other health accounts, and providers that already accept credit cards will be able to use the system at no extra cost, CIGNA says.

The system will include an automated claim repricing system, so that patients and providers will know what costs will be up front and arrange for payment while patients are still in the office, CIGNA says.

CIGNA hopes to start introducing the HealthePass system in 2007, the company says.
