A giant managed care company says it will be selling Medicare managed care plans in all 50 states in the coming year.

The Ovations unit of UnitedHealth Group Inc., Minnetonka, Minn., will be combining the Medicare managed care operations of UnitedHealth with the Medicare operations of 2 large, recently acquired businesses: PacifiCare Health Systems Inc., Cypress, Calif., and Oxford Health Plans Inc., Trumbull, Conn., to form a program with 1.4 million Medicare plan members.

The combined operation has 500,000 doctors and 4,600 hospitals in its network, Ovations says.

Ovations, which sells the plans under the SecureHorizons brand name, is expanding UnitedHealth’s Medicare managed care market to include several new states: Illinois, Idaho, Iowa, Tennessee and Virginia,

Ovations also is expanding service areas in states where it already has been offering some Medicare coverage, such as Houston and Richmond, Va.

The SecureHorizons prescription plan now will cover 1,400 drugs in 2007, up from about 1,100 this year, Ovations says.
