The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has tapped Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Tennessee to help it resolve disputes with manufacturers of wheelchairs, hospital beds and other types of durable medical equipment.

The RiverTrust Solutions Inc. unit of Tennessee Blue, Chattanooga, Tenn., has won a 3-year contract to process second-level appeals for the CMS.

The contract has a value of about $19 million and should lead to the creation of about 55 new jobs, Tennessee Blue says.

RiverTrust will be responsible for hearing about 100,000 appeals from durable medical equipment Medicare administrative contractors each year, Tennessee Blue says.
