WellPoint Appoints State Presidents

A managed care giant is putting in new top executives at 5 of its major state operations.

WellPoint Inc., Indianapolis, has promoted Brian Sassi to be president of Blue Cross of California, Thousand Oaks, Calif., and of BC Life & Health, California Blue’s sister company.

Sassi will succeed David Helwig, who “has decided to leave the company to spend more time with his family and engage in various charitable endeavors,” WellPoint says.

Sassi is now vice president of operations and strategic initiatives at California Blue.

WellPoint also has:

- Promoted Mark Wagar to president of Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield, New York. Wagar, who has been a senior vice president and national accounts executive, will succeed Jason Gorevic, who is becoming the chief marketing and product officer at the parent-company level.

- Promoted Dennis Matheis to president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Missouri, St. Louis. Matheis, who has been the Missouri unit’s general manager of group business, will succeed Stuart Campbell who “has decided to leave the company to spend more time with his family,” WellPoint says.

- Promoted Steve Martenet to president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Martenet has been the Wisconsin unit’s general manager of group business. Stuart Campbell, who was the president of WellPoint’s operations in Missouri, also has been running the Wisconsin operations.

- Promoted Deborah Moessner to be president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Louisville, Kentucky. Moessner, who has been the Kentucky unit’s vice president of group sales, will succeed Jude Thompson, who is becoming president of the individual under-65 market at the parent-company level.
