A large health insurer is realigning its operations.

WellPoint Inc., Indianapolis, will be putting some of its business in a commercial and consumer business unit, and the rest in a specialty, senior and state-sponsored business unit.

The company, formed through a merger of Anthem Inc., Indianapolis, with the old WellPoint Health Networks Inc., Thousand Oaks., Calif., has been putting its operations in a health care unit, a specialty unit, and an “other” unit.

John Watts Jr., president of national accounts at WellPoint, will be president of the commercial and consumer business unit, which will include the UniCare and HealthLink brands, WellPoint says.

Joan Herman, who has been running the WellPoint division that serves seniors and government health plans, will be president of the specialty, senior and state-sponsored business unit.

Mark Boxer, WellPoint’s chief operations and technology officer, will be in charge of technology and service operations for both the commercial and the specialty units.

David Helwig, president of WellPoint’s West Region, will be retiring, WellPoint says.

Keith Faller, president of WellPoint’s Central Region, and Dr. Michael Stocker, president of the company’s East Region, will be acting on previously announced plans to retire, the company says.
