Officials at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services have published a formal request for applications for a new Medicare medical savings account demonstration project.

The CMS already lets carriers offer MSA programs to Medicare beneficiaries, but the rules for the MSAs have been inflexible, and the CMS wants to see if different, more flexible rules will make Medicare MSAs more popular with carriers and beneficiaries, officials say.

The CMS notes that applications for setting up a Medicare MSA program in 2007 are due July 21.
