American International Group Inc. has stepped up and announced plans to donate $1 million to support relief efforts in the areas affected by the May 27 earthquake in Indonesia.

AIG, New York, has offices in Jakarta and Tangerang that sell life insurance as well as general insurance.

“The earthquake in Indonesia has left hundreds of thousands homeless with no access to the most basic necessities,” AIG President Martin Sullivan says in a statement. “The funds will be directed to organizations in Indonesia that can most efficiently and effectively provide much needed relief in the quake-stricken area. AIG offers its deepest sympathies to all those who have been affected by this tragedy.”
